Cockapoo Training: How to And How Not to Housebreak Your Cockapoo

The least every Cockapoo owner can possibly wish is that upon getting back home at the end of the day, or upon returning from a quick errand, the dog has not left any traces of poo or pee at any of the floor rugs, furniture, table legs, etc at home. But this cockapoo training goal is without a doubt within reach, but only through a patient and careful study of housetraining.

1. Do not believe that housetraining a puppy is equivalent to a few stacks of old newspapers, and some corporal punishment whenever the dog tries to sneak pooing indoors. - - If you really love your dog, you will want to exert the effort to be vigilant, patient, and committed to some really well-planned and carefully arranged housebreaking for the dog’s sake.

2. Do not think that the completion of the housebreaking training ensures that the dog is one hundred percent free from accidents after the training. - - The best that can actually be achieved is minimizing the dog’s accidents. Moreover, housetraining takes even longer in the case of smaller toy breeds. But isn’t it that this is all part and parcel of really raising the dog in the best possible way?

3. Don’t take it out on your puppy for pooing or peeing indoors. If you chance upon a soiled area, a correction given at this point is already far too late to make any sense on the dog - - The only thing to be done now is to clean up the mess. Taking the dog to the spot and scolding it or any other punishment simply leads to a dog that is scared of you or scared to “go” in your presence.

On the other hand:

1. Do bring your puppy outside frequently – at least every two hours – in order for it to eliminate. Other opportune moments would also be after it wakes up from a nap, after playing, and after eating or drinking.

2. If you do catch it MIDWAY (which is different than “walking away from the mess”), make some loud distraction to interrupt and distract the dog. Pick it up and bring it to its bathroom spot, where you can praise it immediately after going.

3. Do clean up each and every accidents (and as much as possible removing the odors), unless you want the dog to keep coming back to that spot to eliminate. Removing the dog’s scent will prevent the dog from having an attachment to that particular spot.

A last advice on housetraining as a component of cockapoo training. Be determined to not allow the dog to soil the house. Giving up in your consistency will make matters worse for the dog as to where it can relieve itself, which ends up prolonging the house training.
